CAR CARE / INFORMED CHOICES
Wheel & tire care.
Wheel and tire care belongs within a clearly scoped maintenance or exterior detail. A wheel face, inner barrel and tire sidewall are different surfaces; “clean the wheels” should not leave you guessing what is included.

Identify the finish before choosing a cleaner.
Share whether the wheels are factory-finished, refinished or aftermarket. If you are unsure whether a surface is painted, polished, plated or coated, say so. Appearance alone is not enough to establish chemical compatibility, and a peeling finish deserves a separate assessment.
Meguiar’s instructions for one wheel-and-tire cleaner specify factory clear-coated and painted wheels, a cool surface and a short dwell time. Tesla’s Model 3 manual, meanwhile, restricts chemical wheel cleaners. Those examples show why a product label and the vehicle’s own instructions must be checked together; a familiar brand name is not permission to use one cleaner on every car.
Specify the areas and the access.
| Area | Clarify the job |
|---|---|
| Wheel face | Visible spokes, outer rim and accessible recesses |
| Inner barrel | How far the provider can reach with the wheel fitted |
| Behind spokes | Whether detailed work is included or additional |
| Tire sidewall | Cleaning and your preferred cosmetic finish |
| Wheel removal | A separate, explicitly agreed task; never assume it is included |
Ask what can be improved and what is likely to remain. Embedded residue, corrosion, curb damage and a failing coating are not the same problem. A detailer should explain when cleaning ends and refinishing or repair begins.
Treat tire appearance as a cosmetic choice.
Tell the detailer whether you prefer a natural, satin or glossy appearance. Ask what product would be used and whether it follows the tire manufacturer’s care guidance. Michelin advises against petroleum-based tire cleaners and recommends non-petroleum products or mild soap and water. It also notes that brown sidewalls can have more than one cause, including normal protective compounds migrating to the surface.
Do not equate shine with tire condition. Cuts, bulges, pressure loss or unusual wear belong with a tire professional. A detailing appointment does not replace a tire inspection, repair or the vehicle’s maintenance schedule.
Turn the concern into a useful request.
Try a short description: “Original wheels, ordinary brake dust, accessible faces and inner surfaces if included, natural tire finish. Please flag any areas that need repair.” Add vehicle details and photographs when discussing the job directly with a provider; the current site form does not upload or send them.
Choose basic maintenance for an agreed upkeep scope or exterior detailing for a broader cleaning assessment. Wheel care supports those services here; it is not a separate, newly promised specialty service.
